It’s been a month since the first disease outbreak and so far, over 5,000 people have been infected; infected with a pesticide gone bad. Let’s turn back the clock a little and start from the beginning; May 28th, 2009. Developmental researchers of the agricultural school at the University of Kansas began testing a formula for a new plant pesticide that would eat away at insects and other harmful bacteria on plants. Somehow, the isolated area of plants sprayed was picked and fed to the few cows on the university grounds, therefore spreading the untested pesticide. The researchers of course felt there was no need to warn the school because of the low chance in which those cows would in fact be consumed.
However, it wasn’t more than a week later that the infected cows were slaughtered and used in the university cafeteria. And it was only after the cows were slaughtered that the researchers realized the extent of the issue. But the worst part of the whole thing was the effect that the pesticide had on the students of the school. At first it seemed like the common flu to most of the students, but after the vomiting and high fever continued for days on end, the supposed “common flu” was being questioned. Blood work from the students showed that the pesticide had leaked into their bloodstream, mutated normal blood cells, and continued to further mutate other body cells. At that point, the students were beginning to change drastically. Their blood pressure was through the roof and their eyes became bloodshot. Along with that, saliva production was at an all time high and hormonal imbalances were causing abrupt outbreaks of anger that worsened as the disease progressed. Once all the body cells of an individual became infected, the disease progressed from a blood borne illness to an airborne illness as well. After that, most of the information regarding the disease progression became lost in the chaos that ensued.
The beings that were infected soon became known as zombies and mass panic broke loose. The creatures’ thirst for blood was insatiable and it drove them mad with desire. The so called "zombie virus" quickly spread to surrounding cities and within a month, the disease was entering nearby states such as Oklahoma, Missouri, Nebraska, and Colorado. And now it seems as if there is no stopping it. It was about this time that the Homeland Security decided to step in and investigate the issue further, wondering if any acts of terrorism had occurred in Kansas or other neighboring states. However, Homeland Security had no idea who was involved so any possible leads were followed. And this, my friend, is where our story begins…
